Looking at my blog here, I realize that I never told you about my super dramatic Hiking Accident.
Last February, I joined the Hike for Discovery, which is a fundraising group for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The idea is that we would raise around $4,000 each for LLS and celebrate our fundraising victory by hiking in the Grand Canyon. While we were fundraising, we'd do weekly hikes to get in shape.
So, I go on my very first hike of the season and I'm hiking along, everything's cool, when I must have tripped or stumbled and I cartwheeled down the side of the mountain 30 feet. I landed on my head and had a very very nasty cut from the top of my head to my eyelid and I broke my ankle. But in a miraculous turn of events, in my hiking group was a nurse who previously had been an EMT, so I had my own emergency worker. Patty the nurse really saved my life, because it took about 2 hours for the real emergency workers to arrive (they had to hike in) and I can't imagine a volunteer amateur first aid person would have been capable of managing this kind of accident. After about 3 hours, the search & rescue guys put me in a basket and zipped me up on a cable to the California Highway Patrol helicopter. I don't think this is what people mean when they pay to have a zipline adventure ;^D
They took me to the hospital where I had emergency plastic surgery. The next day the Doc came in and said "I'm so happy, I thought you lost your eyelid, but I found it!"
Two days later they operated on my ankle and gave me a plate and 9 screws. I create a commotion in the airport.
I was in the hospital for a week, then a convelescent hospital for 2 additional weeks, then at a friends house for 2 more weeks before I finally got to go home to my beautiful cats, Hans & Franz.
Now, I'm nearly all better, the scar is barely noticeable and I'm not limping although I can't wear high heels.
Anyway, that's why you didn't hear from me for a few months ;^D
