Folklore Mexicano's Page

My name is Gabriela. I was born in Guadalajara Mexico and I started to dance ballet folklorico when I was seven. My family nurtured my knowledge of mexican culture through travels to different mexican regions where I learned that every state has different styles of folk dancing and everything from the music, the outfits and even the food were different. Later, I represented my hometown in folk dance competitions until when I was 14. At that point, a scout from the local government invited me to become part of "Poncehui" a folk dance troupe endorsed by the local government with whom I traveled regionally. When I eventually moved here years later, I missed that part of my life. All of you as dancers can imagine what was like life with no dance for about 10 years. One day, my German-Italian husband, Nick, encouraged me to look for a "ballet folklorico" which is what we call our genre. After dancing for a folk group for two years, my husband, again, encourage me to star a company of my own, That's how FOLKLORE MEXICANO was born. We love to dance. we have two sons who also dance in our group and keeps our family happy, balanced and eager to keep bringing traditional mexican dance to our audiences from an anthropological and historical approach yet fun, entertaining and interactive. We love all genres of dancing and currently we enjoy classical ballet, social style: salsa, merenge and cumbia in our free time and would love to learn new genres such as modern, ballroom and flamenco.
